We are located in the heart of the Old Town Historic District, two blocks from world famous Duval Street.
Our close proximity to the action of Key West makes for an easy walk or bicycle ride to the lively entertainment district: Mallory Square for unequaled sunset celebrations; the historic seaport for shops, restaurants, museums, and Conch Train tours; and boat charters for fishing, water sports, or just sailing into sundown. If you want to see the rare reef area -- and still avoid wet hair -- you can take a popular glass-bottom boat from the end of Duval Street.
There is no on-site parking available at the House. Fleming Street is a one-way street, affording guests free first come, first serve parking opportunities. A good alternative is the Duval Loop -- a free and frequent bus running 7 days a week, every 15 minutes (10 am - midnight) and every 30 minutes (6 am - 10 am). There are 16 stops placed around Old Town, and the closest stop is only a block away in front of our neighborhood library, historically designated as the very first library in all of South Florida.
Our Captain's House was originally built as a single-family dwelling by New England ships' carpenters in the 1850's. It's architecture is called a Victorian style "eyebrow" design, referencing the two-story columned front porch roofline which sets above the upper windows like an eyebrow. This style is thought to have originated in the Keys, primarily in Key West.
Our expansive and welcoming front porch is a popular draw, often a relaxing wind down chance for travelers to meet one another and share activities and discoveries from another beautiful Key West day.
Guests also enjoy checking out the extensive and diverse foliage on the grounds, as well as the uncommon tropical plants Captain Del has collected over the last 40 years. The jewel, however -- and one that brings onlookers from all over the country -- is the stately Kapok tree, standing at over 100 feet tall and estimated to be well over 200 years old. It has been listed in publications as the oldest Kapok in North America.
